Pieces of Nursery Decoration: The Must-haves and The Excesses
Planning the nursery is a major part of adding a new baby to your family, whether or not your first or a new addition. Baby room themes begins with meticulous pre-planning of the area intended for the nursery room. Do you plan for the baby to stay in your room at first, or will he or she be placed directly into a new bedroom? Are there siblings already in the room with their own needs? Parents can have the best of both worlds by setting up a nursery for the daytime, but using a bassinet or co-sleeper in the bedroom with them overnight; this proximity especially makes sense if you choose to breastfeed your baby. Bedding for a baby needs to be flat and have no blankets. Remember that babies are best kept warm in a snuggly outfit rather than under potentially smothering blankets.
Should a separate nursery be needed, finding the right baby equipment is a necessity. The federal government regularly issues guideline updates for safe crib dimensions, not least for the space between the rungs. Remember, heirloom cribs are beautifully made but you must take into consideration the safety of your baby.
Baby bedding in the crib should fit tightly against the crib mattress with no chance of pulling it up by accident; this will prevent the baby from getting tangled in the sheet, or worse. Ease of washing and durability should be considered in selecting baby bedding. White sheets are notorious for being easily stained and though you may be tempted to purchase highly decorative baby bedding instead, you might also want to consider its stain resistance. Dark colors and patterns help mask stains that may occur on crib bedding.
Although you don’t absolutely need a changing table, it certainly simplifies the task of diapering. Till the stage your baby is small to be in diapers, it is convenient to have a dresser with a built-in changing table. Once the child grows older and is potty trained, he requires a regular dresser with more room to store. Make sure that the changing table you select has rails and safety straps. Any changing table should include a cloth changing pad, also most likely in a dark color that will hide the unavoidable poop spots.
Depending on the needs of the individual, using a diaper pail helps to aid in moving the child from infant to toddler and thus allowing for the child to become more accustomed to eating at a table. Disposable diapers require an odor resistance pail, preferably one with a barrier seal, while accessibility is essential for laundering of cloth diapers. Though you may choose carefully what will best fill your needs but you should know that no matter what you do, the nursery will likely have an unpleasant odor for awhile.
A rocking chair is not a requirement, but as any mommy who has walked the floors at 3 AM can tell you, it’s a nice luxury. Rocking chairs are widely available used, and the older ones are actually more comfortable than newly-constructed ones; you may consider asking Grandma for hers, as a family memento.
The last part of putting together a nursery, though the most enjoyable, is decorating! You don’t have to shop exclusively in the designated baby aisles; instead, consider what you want your child to have, and what your family offers to make it unique. Anyone can decorate with Noah’s Ark or Pooh, but it starts a child off on a special path when the nursery is filled with moons and stars, or dragons, or even pictures of all the people who love him or her. If you raise your baby with creativity, he is likely to imitate you.
